A man’s life was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting involving the police. The incident unfolded on Monday, July 3, 2023, shortly before 2 p.m. in the 4 1/2 Alley, located just west of 14th Street in Huntington, West Virginia.
According to Huntington Police Chief Phil Watkins, the chain of events began around 1:40 p.m. when officers responded to a distress call in the 400 block of 14th Street. The caller reported that a man was making threats to shoot them and “blow up” a nearby residence.
Upon arrival, the first officer on the scene approached the suspect, who displayed non-cooperative behavior. Allegedly claiming to possess a firearm, the suspect charged at the officer, leaving them with no choice but to respond with lethal force to protect themselves and others.
The officer discharged their weapon, shooting the suspect, and immediately provided medical assistance until emergency medical services (EMS) arrived. The injured man was swiftly transported to a local hospital, but despite the best efforts of medical professionals, he tragically succumbed to his injuries.
