Ohio Governor Authorizes Ohio State Highway Patrol to Assist Texas with Border Surveillance
Upon receiving the request for assistance from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine authorized the deployment of a contingent from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) to assist local law enforcement in border surveillance.
In the coming weeks, fourteen OSHP troopers and supervisors will travel to Texas. As part of their two-week assignment, they will provide additional manpower and resources to strengthen border surveillance efforts. This mission will not require the OSHP to make arrests.
The deployment of OSHP troopers to assist Texas law enforcement is the second time Governor DeWine has approved the deployment in nearly two years. Ohio has previously supported border security measures in July 2021.
Ohio has maintained a continuous presence on the border since October 2020 to enhance security operations under Governor DeWine’s leadership. Following the request of DHS and the National Guard Bureau, Governor DeWine initially deployed approximately 115 Ohio National Guard members to support Southwest Border operations. Subsequently, nearly 325 Ohio National Guard members have been deployed to Texas, with 125 members currently on active duty at the border.
The collaboration between Ohio and Texas in addressing border security concerns serves as an example of states working together to address pressing issues. By leveraging resources and expertise, these partnerships aim to enhance border surveillance efforts and contribute to both states’ overall safety and security.
