Out of Jail in the Morning, Accused of Waving Gun by Afternoon

police investigation

Less than 12 hours after being released from jail, a Portsmouth woman was accused of brandishing a firearm during a heated confrontation on 17th Street.

Police say the woman had been arrested the previous night along with two others on outstanding warrants connected to a stolen gun investigation. She appeared in Portsmouth Municipal Court the next morning and was released on her own recognizance around 8:30 a.m.

By 4:45 p.m., a caller on 17th Street reported the same woman pointed a gun at her during an argument. A witness told officers she was holding her 2-year-old grandson when the woman came into the residence demanding her phone. The witness said when she explained the phone had been given to her brother, the woman became irate, yelled, and pulled out a firearm while leaving the home.

The grandmother said she ran upstairs with the child until the woman left. She declined, however, to file a written statement. The child’s mother, who was not present at the time, also declined to provide a statement.

Police attempted to locate the suspect at her residence but got no response. Officers confirmed she had no active protection orders against her.

The case remains under investigation.
