Pike County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Piketon man for breaking the bones of his four-month-old son. And he wasn’t the only Pike County resident hauled off to jail for abuse last week.  We’ll start with the horrifying case of Jeffery D. Burris.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital notified the sheriff’s office that a four-month-old baby boy was brought there for a broken arm. The hospital discovered the child had multiple broken bones at various stages of healing. Medical professionals tested the child to make sure he wasn’t suffering from brittle bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta). When they ruled that out, they notified law enforcement the injuries were a result of severe child abuse.

The sheriff’s office conducted interviews with the baby’s parents, Jeffery Burris and Lindsay Bumgardner. Officials said they obtained a confession during those interviews.

The sheriff’s office charged Burris with child endangering and felonious assault. The court arraigned Burris on August 24 and the court set a bond of $160,000. The sheriff said the investigation is still ongoing.  The Pike County Grand Jury will hear the case against Burris and Bumgardner during the next term.

Woman Hospitalized After Assault

Last Wednesday, the Pike County Sheriff’s office dispatched a deputy to Pike Lake Road for a welfare check. The deputy discovered a woman with multiple bruises on her face, neck and body.

The woman’s boyfriend admitted to the deputy that he caused her injuries. The boyfriend told the deputy he got upset while drinking. Pike County EMS transported the woman to Adena Pike Hospital. The deputy took the boyfriend, 60-year-old Larry Nichols to the Pike County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff charged him with domestic violence and felonious assault. An officer transported him to the Butler County Jail. The sheriff will present the case to the grand jury.

Dog Warden Catches Wanted Man

Pikes County Dog Warden Deputy Delbert Tilley spotted a wanted felon while he was out on a dog call last Thursday. Raymond Nutt, Jr. had felony warrants for domestic violence, assault, and probation violation.

Eagle-eyed Tilley spotted Nutt asleep in his truck in the area of Germany Road. He called for backup and another deputy along with an ODNR officer responded. Officers took Nutt into custody without incident. Officers seized a large amount of suspected drugs and cash from his front pocket. Nutt could face additional charges, pending the results of tests on the evidence.
