Preparing Your Child for the Next School Year
ShareTweetEmail

Summer vacation gives kids a deserved break from academics, but that doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. You can help them prepare for the next grade with enrichment activities. Keeping your children active in the learning process can make the transition from summer to the school year easier.

Summer learning shouldn’t just be schoolwork, either. Play and relaxation are also highly beneficial to childhood development. Here are some ways to prepare your child for the next school year.

Consult Their Teacher

Before the final day of the school year, check in with your child’s teacher. Ask them what you can do to prepare your kid for the next grade. They may suggest reading lists and activities that you can do as a family.

Be sure to keep the reading lighthearted and aligned with their interests. Graphic novels and comic books can help their reading comprehension for the following year. Activities can be as simple as having your child search on Google for information about vacation destinations.

Make Learning Fun

Learning doesn’t have to feel like learning. Many activities in every town or city can enrich your child’s summer vacation. Here are a few examples:

  • Take a trip to the zoo to learn about the different types of animals there.
  • Check out the library with your child to pique their interest in reading and learning.
  • Visit a historical site near your home and explain its significance to your child.
  • Go to a museum to learn about the history of your region.

Review Their Grades

As the school year approaches, take a look at your child’s performance from the previous year. Identify their academic strengths and weaknesses. Review their test scores and teacher notes to see which subjects they might need to improve in. Plan activities around the topics your kid has trouble with. As fall approaches, revisit the information with your child to see if they’ve progressed.

Preparing your child for the next school year can help improve their reading comprehension and other academic skills. With some enjoyable summer learning, they can return to the classroom refreshed and reenergized.
