The call began when dispatch announced, “Dispatch to all units. Standby for a message. After 33 years of service, Officer Jimmy Bowen is retiring. We would like to thank Officer Bowen for his dedication, humor, reliability to his bother and sisters in blue. You will be missed by all. Congratulations and good luck in your future endeavors. Unit 133, we will take it from here.”

Bowen sounded choked up as he replied, “Thank you, God bless you all.”

Another officer chimed in, “Congratulations, it’s an honor and privilege to work with you.” Another colleague added, “Myself and my half unit wish you a great retirement. Stay safe and congratulations.”

Retirement Plans – Golf and Grandchildren

Bowen’s daughter also made an appearance on the last call. She said, “Hi Dad!” before her voice choked with tears. “I just want to let you know how proud we are of you. You worked really hard for a long time. You deserve this.”

One benefit of retirement is that Bowen can limit his contact with the public. His daughter said, “You can go home and quarantine and then come and see your grandbabies.” His daughter also dropped a hint at his retirement plans. “You can golf for the rest of your life. I am so proud of you. We love you so much.”

Officer Chris Dixon said, “Congratulations and enjoy your retirement.” A fellow colleague reminded Bowen that he would always have brothers and sisters in blue to count on. “Congratulations, Sir. We’re still here for you.”

The Portsmouth Fire Department also chimed in on the call with congratulations and good wishes.

Bowen isn’t the only member of local law enforcement retiring today, Captain John Murphy announced his retirement from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office today as well.
