The man accused of driving under the influence in a fatal crash that claimed the lives of three children and a woman back in late May has waived his right to a speedy trial.
According to court records, Gage Smith’s attorney waived his client’s right to a speedy trial during his most recent hearing.
During that hearing, Smith’s public defender, Shawn Stratton, also filed a request for disclosure of evidence, a motion to preserve evidence, a request for a bill of particulars, and submitted a witness list.
Law enforcement says he was driving under the influence when he crossed the center line and slammed into a pickup truck. Smith faces multiple counts of aggravated vehicular homicide.
The three child passengers in the backseat of Smith’s 1998 Chevy Caviler died at the scene. His adult front-seat passenger, Courtney Copas, was transported to a Columbus hospital with serious injuries and later died.
