A Franklin Furnace son is expected to serve 9 months in jail after copping a plea in the elder abuse death of his 79-year-old mother.
After negotiations with the Defense Counsel, Attorney Shawn Stratton, the charge of involuntary manslaughter was dismissed by the Prosecutor.
Scioto County Common Pleas court sentenced Matthew Vansickle, 58, to 16 months in prison with credit for the 7 months he spent in jail awaiting trial.
If you’ll recall, Vansickle was arrested after medical personnel at SOMC contacted the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office to report their concerns about a patient brought in for treatment. Medics feared the 79-year-old woman was a victim of elder abuse.
When detectives responded to the hospital, they found injuries consistent with abuse, which they photographed. The hospital transferred the victim, 79-year-old Patricia Vansickle, of Franklin Furnace to hospice care.
Detectives arrested Matthew Vansickle, 58, also of Franklin Furnace, for failure to provide care for a functionally impaired adult.
When his mother passed away from her injuries, detectives upgraded Vansickle’s charge to involuntary manslaughter.
