Reliable sources tell us that an intoxicated Scioto County Sheriff’s Deputy kicked up a fuss at a local liquor store.
Scioto County Daily News is investigating reports from multiple witnesses about an incident that went down at the Portsmouth Kroger on Friday Night.
Reliable Sources
- Multiple reliable sources tell us that a deputy from the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office got out of hand when he was denied entrance to the State Liquor Agency inside the supermarket. As a separate entity, the liquor store has its own hours and its own occupancy limit.
- The occupancy limit is part of Ohio’s COVID-19 restrictions on retailers. These rules are intended to make sure people are able to maintain a proper social distance while shopping for essentials.
- According to our witnesses, the incident happened just before closing time. Deputy X was apparently afraid that he might miss out on his chance to buy liquor. Witnesses also claim that he appeared to be intoxicated.
Deputy X then allegedly flashed his badge. However, Kroger employees were not impressed. In fact, one is reported to have told him that if the current sheriff wouldn’t do anything about Deputy X’s behavior, they’d contact the presumptive next sheriff, David Thoroughman. Expecting that Thoroughman would take care of him when he got into office.
Bitter Battle
Thoroughman appears to have secured a narrow lead in the bitterly contested race to replace Marty Donini as Scioto County Sheriff. Sheriff Donini is retiring from the job after 16 years this November.
Portsmouth Police were called about the incident with Deputy X but did not respond to the scene. However, before anyone gets too excited, it is not uncommon for PPD to not go to the scene when Kroger’s own security has already handled the matter. Often, they’ll just take a report.
- SCDN should have their hands on the police logs sometime Monday or early Tuesday. We won’t release the name of the officer in question until we have it confirmed in an official report.
- We made several attempts but were unable to obtain a statement from anyone at Kroger.
- We’re putting in calls to the Sheriff’s Office.
- We’ll have updates as new information comes in.
