Sharp-eyed clerks alerted Portsmouth Police to a possible credit card crime spree after spotting some strange behavior but officers had the darndest time catching up to the crooks despite them turning up all over town.
At 6:30 p.m., a clerk reported two men came into the Super Quik on the Scioto Trail and used multiple credit cards to charge almost $1000. They told officers they had the pair and their vehicle caught on camera.
At 8:30 pm, a clerk at the Gay Street Marathon reported two men using multiple credit cards purchased $3500 in gift cards and scratch-off lottery tickets. When the clerk mentioned calling the police, the pair left.
Officers weren’t sure if any crime had taken place, but the clerks did provide officers with copies of the receipts, security footage, and a description of the black SUV they were driving.
At 7:30 pm on Sunday, a clerk at the Gallia Street BP reported that two people tried to buy $1,000 worth of lottery tickets but their credit card was denied. Officers told the employees to call them if the suspects returned and requested a video of the incident.
Just after 8 pm, Acquired Taste Shoes reported that three men with credit cards kept trying to buy merchandise but the card was repeatedly denied. They left the area in a black SUV.
