Sword-Waving Meltdown Ends in Arrest

A woman accused of waving a katana at a man during an erratic outburst was arrested after deputies say she rambled about methamphetamine before officers had even asked her about drugs. Lawrence County deputies responded to a domestic violence complaint after the caller reported that a woman living with him was "going crazy" and threatening him with a knife. According to the report, the man said the woman had also been taken to the hospital the previous day because of similarly erratic behavior. He told deputies she had been waving a blade at him before throwing it over an embankment into weeds and brush. When deputies arrived, the woman was standing on an upstairs balcony and initially refused commands to come downstairs. An officer eventually went upstairs and persuaded her to come down. Once deputies tried to speak with her, the report says she began rambling and immediately insisted that any methamphetamine found in her purse did not belong to her. That statement came before deputies had located any methamphetamine. Because of her behavior and the reported threat, deputies detained her. She later gave officers consent to search her purse and again said anything connected to meth was not hers. Deputies found drug paraphernalia inside but reported finding no suspected methamphetamine. The caller provided a written statement and clarified that the weapon involved was not simply a kitchen knife. He said the woman had allegedly been swinging a katana at him while acting erratically. Based on the statement and the circumstances at the scene, deputies arrested the woman for domestic violence and transported her to the Lawrence County Jail. Why Meth Can Produce Bizarre, Erratic Behavior The report does not establish that the woman had used methamphetamine, and deputies did not report finding the drug in her purse. But her unsolicited comments about meth raise a broader issue familiar to law enforcement and emergency responders. Methamphetamine is a powerful stimulant that can cause severe agitation, confusion, paranoia and psychotic symptoms. Long-term or heavy use can also be associated with hallucinations, mood disturbances and aggressive or violent behavior. SAMHSA notes that stimulant intoxication can produce hyperexcitability, agitation, paranoia and hallucinations, while meth-related psychosis can sometimes persist even after the immediate effects of the drug wear off. That can make encounters unpredictable, particularly when weapons are involved. Anyone confronted by someone who appears severely agitated, paranoid or disconnected from reality should avoid trying to physically intervene and call 911 from a safe location.
