Teen mothers and schooling: issues and challenges

Teenage pregnancy is at a high point in many developing countries and not only. This is due to many cultural contexts and the lack of sexual education. Unplanned pregnancies happen, but when you are an adolescent in school, facing it is more challenging. It comes with many negative emotions, fears, stress, with overwhelming.

Having a child will change your life no matter your age. And when you are a teenager, things might become pretty problematic. So, what are the challenges a Teen mother has to face? What are the missing pieces? How is teenage pregnancy affecting their academic progress?

Juggling Between School and Raising a Child

One of the main challenges and struggles of teenage mothers is juggling between school and raising a child. Even though they might get help from their family, they still need to be close to their child. Many teenage mothers do not have the support of their families, so they need to face even more serious challenges. This is one of the reasons many of them just drop out of school and focus on raising a child.

However, those who get help or decide to continue to pursue their studies at the same time find themselves having to face many challenges. They need to invest time in caring for and raising the child, which, when he or she is an infant, needs constant feeding and care. At the same time, taking part in classes and completing assignments takes at least 10 hours per day. In this case, teenage mothers can get the help of an online service that can provide them with free essay samples online. Students who have to write an abortion pros and cons essay can find many examples online that can inspire them to write their papers. This will make the process of completing the tasks way easier so that they can take care of the baby too.

High Costs

Teen mothers who want to pursue school simultaneously have to face another challenge. Raising a child and taking care of it, besides taking time, patience, and effort, it takes money too. Today, the costs are pretty high as all the products you need for caring for a baby are expensive. And as most teen mothers do not have a job, this makes raising their child pretty challenging.

Diapers, bottles, baby formula, clothes, toys, and other healthcare costs add up at the end of the month into a huge check. If teen moms do not get the support of their families or their partners, they are financially challenged. And often, this leads to them dropping out of school and getting a job so that they can support the financial costs of raising their child.

Changes in Social Life

One of the main things that happen when you are a teen mom is that your social life suffers a lot of changes. Some of them might continue going to school, but they also need to care for their child, so their social life changes. As they need to meet the child’s needs, they will, in most cases, simply give up social activities. If they drop out of school, they will get a job to meet the financial costs of having a child.

This also might not give them enough time to meet with their friends, especially when they do not have the support of a partner or family. In the majority of cases, teen mothers simply choose to focus on their children rather than on their social life. However, they still have access to many communities that want to help and educate teen mothers. Whether it is a social service agency, a church, or a community center, they can find help here, but also activities specially designed for teen mothers. Once their baby is born, teen moms will certainly experience changes in their social lives, as their interests and focus will change too.

Conclusion

As in many developing countries, the percentage of teen mothers is high, there are a lot of challenges they have to face. But the essential issue we need to focus on is the lack of sexual education they get, which is one of the main reasons for teenage pregnancy.

At the same time, they have to face so many challenges. If they choose to pursue their academic goals, they will have a pretentious time juggling between school and caring for their child. There are also high costs which might force them to group out from school and look for a job. Then, they experience changes in their social life as their focus changes on the child.
