How safe is Scioto County? Looking at the police logs and reading people’s online posts, you might think it’s pretty darn dangerous, but where does it really stack up compared to the rest of the country?
Statistics provided by Crimegrade.org paint an interesting picture that’s backed up by what we’ve seen on call logs from PPD and the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office. These grades are based on the number of crimes per 1,000 people.
According to their scores, the worst spot for crime in the county is Lucasville. That community gets a failing grade of “F” on the CrimeGrade scale. However, the Tomlinson Addition and surrounding streets get an A for safety. Coming in just below Lucasville are the Minford area and some parts of the Village of New Boston, scoring what amounts to a D-.
Just how safe Portsmouth is depends on where you live. The area between 4th and 11th Street gets a failing grade, as do some areas near Mound Park and Wayne Hills. However, some parts of the Hilltop manage to score a C grade, while areas like Willow Way, Seneca Drive, and Old Post Road get an A for safety.
West Portsmouth is either completely safe or scores a D, depending on the area. Wheelersburg is solidly graded A or A- except for the area near 2nd and 3rd street and the Wildmere, Charlevoix, Pinehurst, and Iroquois Avenue areas.
Overall, Scioto County scores a B. That means the crime rate is slightly lower than the average US County. CrimeGrade says 32% of counties are safer, and 68% of counties are more dangerous.
What really hurts our area is the high incidence of property crimes. When you add in violent crime and other crimes, we are actually safer than most places.
As for neighboring counties, Greenup County scores an A, Pike County a C-, Jackson, Lawrence, and Adams a B+, and Ross a C.
