TikTok banned?
The United States is seriously considering banning all Chinese owned social media apps, including TikTok, suggesting it passes information to the Chinese government. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday that Americans should be cautious while using the product. China has denied all charges.
Recently, India banned TikTok as well as 58 apps owned by Chinese companies. Oddly, TikTok itself is actually banned in China.
ByteDance, the company that owns TikTok most recently hired Disney executive Kevin Mayer as CEO and COO. They promised users’ data are not being stored on any servers in China.
Senators, from both parties, believe TikTok is a threat to national security. An intelligence investigation can potentially force ByteDance to return all information gathered on U.S. citizens.
For now, China denies it and the U.S. Intelligence community (in nonpartisan agreement) believes it.
