Scioto County Commissioners were not happy with the drastic drop in tax revenue for the county in September.
“This might be one of the ugliest ones I’ve seen.” Scioto County Commissioner Bryan Davis didn’t mince words when discussing the latest numbers for county sales tax. He said September’s numbers point to a definite economic slowdown in the area. Local sales tax stood at $1,043,995.99. “Unfortunately, that’s down $155,171.05. That is not good.”
The decrease is compared to revenue from September of 2023. Davis said the decrease in revenue is why it’s more important than ever for commissioners to watch their spending.
Commissioner Scottie Powell agreed. “We’ve been sounding the alarm for officeholders to manage their budgets. We have had several months where we’ve been down. This is by far the largest difference that we’ve seen. Hopefully, it’s a blip. But I’m not so confident that it is.”
Powell said that departments have asked for more money during budget discussions but commissioners have stood firm that they can’t give it. He urged county officials to keep a close eye on their budgets.
