Portsmouth turned into a watery nightmare early Sunday morning as 911 was flooded—literally—with emergency calls about rising water swallowing streets, cars, and even parts of a hillside!
At 1:18 AM, a frantic caller reported their car had floated away on Harding Avenue near Scioto Shoe Mart in Sciotoville. And they weren’t alone—more desperate drivers called in, saying the bridge in the area had disappeared underwater, leaving vehicles trapped in rising floodwaters on Mildale Road.
But the chaos didn’t stop there. In a terrifying turn, part of a hillside on Daniels Drive gave way, sending mud and debris crashing into a backyard on Dorman Street and taking power lines down with it!

Emergency crews scrambled to respond as AEP Power and Portsmouth City Services rushed to the scene to tackle the destruction. As the water finally recedes, residents are left picking up the pieces—and bracing for what might come next!
Meanwhile, in the county’s western portion, flood waters continue to rise. As the Scioto River and the creeks and tributaries empty out, that water has no place to go but to the Ohio River. Residents in Nile Township report continued rising waters, putting more residents in danger.
