Wayne Hills: Dangerous and Ignored

How many times have you said, How many times do I have to tell you? How many times have you been told and you still won’t listen? In this case, PMHA has been informed 171 times that Wayne Hills is out of control through our reporting. Is that not enough? Clearly, the answer is no, it’s not enough. We’re not motivated by just 171 reports of chaos on our property. We’re perfectly content with pictures of fully armed SWAT team members with automatic weapons converging on our property and imprinting that visual on the minds of dozens of young children. Tell me about your childhood memories. Do your childhood memories include scenes like that? Portsmouth Codified Ordinance chapter 509 talks about peace. The peace and quiet of a neighborhood is mandated by law. In addition, the Ohio Revised Code has several laws pertaining to nuisance properties and how they can be forced to clean up or shut down. These 171 instances are just on the actual property of Wayne Hills. Untold amounts of crime have been perpetrated around the city by residents (or unregistered “guests”) of Wayne Hills. These include the never-ending issues at Speedway, break-ins along nearby streets, and car thefts all have police searching Wayne Hills for their suspects. What about the overdoses? We’ve reported extensively about out-of-town drug dealers finding vulnerable single moms in Wayne Hills to use as their local base of operations for county-wide distribution. Have you ever heard of the Covenant of Quiet Enjoyment? This is a right of any tenant of a rental property. This is a protected right. The Covenant of Quiet Enjoyment requires landlords to do everything possible to ensure their tenants enjoy their rented properties undisturbed. As a landlord, you have a legal responsibility to protect your tenants.-- In the application process for PMHA, you must identify every person staying in your apartment. They have the legal responsibility to ensure that information is correct and up to date. Do they? Have they? PMHA tells SCDN that they do. See if these figures ring true to you. According to PMHA, there are 27 buildings with a total of 243 apartments. However, they say the population of the neighborhood is only 571. By the numbers, Wayne Hills is the most dangerous neighborhood in the City of Portsmouth. It’s not fair to the well-intended, responsible people (and innocent children) who call it home. Preventing and fixing this is totally possible. The residents are represented by the 5th Ward City Councilperson. Where is that representative? Why is he more concerned with seeking other elected offices, attacking small business owners, and escalating a neighbor dispute into a city-wide lighting ban? Why are these residents voiceless and powerless? PMHA is required by law to provide a safe and peaceful environment for all residents. Nothing will change as long as the residents feel like their hands are tied and their voices are muted. This is not a rant. This is a declaration that SCDN stands with the innocent residents of Wayne Hills. We are fully prepared to take the next steps if the PMHA and the 5th Ward Councilperson continue to let chaos reign on these families. #ChooseYourPortsmouth
