Jews and Zionists are not the same thing, and being opposed to Zionism does not automatically make someone antisemitic. I made that distinction in my earlier article, Understanding the Nuances: Jews and Zionism, and the years since have made the distinction more important, not less.
Somehow, we have arrived at a place where criticizing Zionism can end a conversation before the conversation even starts.
Oppose an Israeli government policy?
Antisemite.
Question American military support for Israel?
Jew hater.
Reject Zionism as a political ideology?
Same accusation.
That may be an effective way to silence people.
It is not an honest way to understand them.
Jews and Zionists Are Different Things
Start with the words.
Antisemitism means prejudice, discrimination or hostility directed toward Jewish people because they are Jewish. The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition makes that basic distinction and also states that criticism of Israel comparable to criticism directed at another country is not, by itself, antisemitic.
Zionism is different.
At its core, Zionism is the movement supporting Jewish national self-determination and a Jewish state in the historic land of Israel. Even organizations that take a very strong pro-Zionist position, such as the Anti-Defamation League, define Zionism in political and national terms.
One describes hatred or discrimination against a people.
The other describes a political-national movement.
They can intersect.
They are not synonyms.
Jews Have Never Spoken With One Political Voice
This should be obvious, but apparently it needs to be said.
Jewish people do not all hold the same opinion about Israel or Zionism.
Some Jews strongly identify as Zionists.
Some support the existence of Israel while fiercely criticizing particular Israeli governments.
Some reject Zionism altogether.
Others object to nationalism more broadly.
And many Zionists are not Jewish at all. Christian Zionism has been a major political and religious force in the United States for decades.
So the phrase Jews and Zionists cannot honestly be treated as though both words describe the same population.
My earlier article on Jews and Zionism made exactly that point: discussions about Zionism should be separated from assumptions about Judaism or Jewish people as a whole.
There Is Serious Disagreement About Anti-Zionism
This is where we need some intellectual discipline.
Not everyone agrees with my conclusion.
The Jerusalem Declaration on Antisemitism says that opposing Zionism or advocating different constitutional arrangements between the Jordan River and Mediterranean Sea is not, on its face, antisemitic. It defines antisemitism around discrimination, prejudice, hostility and violence against Jews as Jews.
The Nexus Document similarly argues that criticism of Zionism and opposition to Israeli policies should not automatically be classified as antisemitism. It also warns that accusations of antisemitism can themselves be misused to suppress legitimate criticism of Israel.
The ADL takes a substantially broader position.
It argues that contemporary anti-Zionism can be antisemitic when it denies Jewish people a right to self-determination, demonizes Zionists collectively, applies historic anti-Jewish conspiracy theories to Israel or uses “Zionist” merely as a replacement word for “Jew.” The ADL’s backgrounder on anti-Zionism lays out that position directly.
That disagreement is important.
It proves the issue cannot honestly be reduced to:
Anti-Zionist equals antisemite.
Serious scholars and Jewish organizations themselves disagree over where the line should be drawn.
When the Label Replaces the Argument
This is where propaganda enters the discussion.
Propaganda does not always require a lie.
Sometimes it takes something real and stretches it until it becomes politically useful.
Antisemitism is real.
It is ancient.
It has murdered millions.
Jewish families continue to face threats, vandalism, conspiracy theories and violence because they are Jewish.
That reality deserves to be defended without hesitation.
But precisely because antisemitism is serious, the accusation should not be cheapened into a political shortcut.
If someone criticizes settlement policy, answer the criticism.
If someone questions civilian deaths in Gaza, answer the question.
If someone objects to billions of dollars in American assistance to Israel, debate American foreign policy.
If someone rejects Zionism altogether, ask that person what they mean and why.
Calling the critic a Jew hater without examining the actual argument may be politically efficient.
It is also a remarkably convenient way to avoid answering anything.
The Nexus framework specifically warns that accusations of antisemitism should not be used as a weapon to suppress criticism of Israel. That warning matters because once a moral accusation becomes a political shield, both political debate and the fight against genuine antisemitism suffer.
But Anti-Zionists Have Responsibilities Too
Fairness requires the other half of this conversation.
You cannot simply replace the word “Jew” with “Zionist” and pretend an old antisemitic conspiracy suddenly became political commentary.
“Zionists control the banks.”
“Zionists control the media.”
“Zionists secretly control Washington.”
We know those accusations.
They are centuries-old claims about Jewish power with a different noun inserted.
The ADL has documented how anti-Zionist language can recycle older antisemitic conspiracies, including ideas about Jewish control, divided loyalty and secret influence.
That is not legitimate criticism.
If you attack a synagogue in Ohio because you are angry with the government of Israel, you are not fighting Zionism.
You are attacking Jews.
If you demand that an American Jewish student apologize for the actions of Israel before being permitted to participate in a political movement, you are holding that student responsible for a foreign government because of Jewish identity.
That crosses the line.
So does blaming Jewish people collectively for an Israeli military action.
The rules have to work both ways.
Jews Are Not Netanyahu
Jewish people living in Portsmouth are not Benjamin Netanyahu.
Jewish people living in Columbus are not the Israeli military.
Jewish families in New York are not responsible for legislation passed by the Knesset.
That should not require explaining.
Yet one of the strangest consequences of this conflict has been the expectation that ordinary Jewish people must continually answer for the Israeli government.
We would recognize the absurdity instantly in most other situations.
We do not demand that every American Catholic defend every Vatican decision.
We do not make every Muslim answer for the government of Saudi Arabia.
We should not assign Israeli government policy to every Jewish person on Earth.
Jews are people.
Zionists hold a political position.
Once again, Jews and Zionists are not interchangeable terms.
Criticism of Israel Is Not a Hate Crime
There is another distinction we are losing.
Governments are not people.
Governments have policies.
Governments have leaders.
Governments make mistakes.
Governments conduct wars.
Governments can be investigated, protested, condemned and voted against.
Israel should not be uniquely exempt from that scrutiny.
Even the IHRA working definition, frequently invoked in debates over antisemitism, states that criticism of Israel similar to criticism directed at any other country cannot be regarded as antisemitic.
The ADL likewise acknowledges that criticism of Israeli leaders and government actions can be legitimate political speech, even while it takes a much harder position against anti-Zionism itself.
Those distinctions matter because otherwise the argument becomes impossible to win.
Criticism becomes hatred.
Protest becomes prejudice.
Opposition becomes bigotry.
And political ideology becomes ethnic identity.
That is how language gets weaponized.
We Should Be Able to Hold Two Truths
Here are two statements that should be able to exist beside one another:
Antisemitism is real and should be confronted wherever it appears.
Opposition to Zionism is not automatically antisemitism.
Nothing about the second statement weakens the first.
In fact, I would argue the opposite.
When we distinguish genuine Jew hatred from political disagreement, we make accusations of antisemitism more credible.
When every critic gets the same label, the label eventually stops telling us very much.
That would be a terrible outcome for Jewish people who actually face antisemitic harassment and violence.
Words matter.
Definitions matter.
Context matters.
Ask the Better Question
I am less interested in whether someone calls himself a Zionist or anti-Zionist than I am in what that person believes should happen to actual human beings.
Do Jews deserve safety?
Yes.
Do Palestinians deserve safety?
Yes.
Do Jews deserve religious and civil freedom?
Yes.
Do Palestinians?
Yes.
Can Israel defend its citizens?
Of course.
Can the methods used in that defense be questioned?
Of course.
Can Zionism be debated as a political philosophy?
It must be.
Does rejecting Zionism automatically make someone a Jew hater?
No.
And does calling yourself anti-Zionist give you permission to hate Jews?
Absolutely not.
That is the distinction we need to recover.
The propaganda works best when we stop making distinctions.
One side tells us every Zionist is evil.
Another tells us every anti-Zionist hates Jews.
Both approaches eliminate the uncomfortable work of understanding another person.
I would rather ask what someone actually believes.
Because if we cannot distinguish Jews and Zionists, governments and citizens, political ideology and religious identity, criticism and hatred, then we are no longer having a debate.
We are simply choosing labels and throwing them at one another.
And nobody learns anything that way.
