Portsmouth Police reports include, a driver who made a quick cigarette run before starting a COVID quarantine, a thief stuffed a backpack with steaks, and a man without a license was just looking for love. Under The Influence
- Just after 2:30 am, a caller reported a man staggering around at 17th and Mound. Police could not locate him.
- Officers responded to a report of a possibly high man on 17th Street at 11:30 am. It turned out he already had a warrant. They took him into custody.
Disturbing Behavior
Police answered a call for a disturbance at Gallia and Linden at 4:38 am. The caller said a man was hitting a woman. Officers detained the man and took him into custody.
Trashy Behavior
A caller reported a man going through a dumpster and throwing garbage everywhere on Robinson Avenue just before 1 pm. Police advised him to clean up the mess.
Stealing Steaks
Just before 2 pm, a caller reported a meat theft at Aldi on Gallia. A man with a camo backpack helped himself to some packages of steaks and left the store.
Officers caught up with him at Iron Body Fitness and took him back to Aldi. The store retrieved the meat and then filed a trespass order against the suspect.
Breaking In
A 17th Street caller reported two men behind his house attempting to break in just before 5 pm. Police said the men didn’t break into the home but did trespass on the property.
They asked the property owner to forward security camera footage to them.
Hey! That’s My Stuff
A Summit Street caller reported a vehicle break-in just after 3 pm. The thief made off with a phone charger, 2 books of CDs, sunglasses, and the vehicle’s registration and insurance cards
Held At Gunpoint
Just after 6:30 pm, a Kendall Avenue caller reported a neighbor leaning out a window yelling for help. The man said he was being held at gunpoint.
When police arrived on the scene they were told that the person causing the disturbance had left. They did not find any weapons.
Cigarettes Before Quarantine
Police made a traffic stop on Waller Street just before 9 pm. The woman told them she’d been sick and had just gotten a COVID-19 test.
She wanted to run out and grab some cigarettes in case she had to quarantine. Police advised her about her tags.
Suspicious Family
A family requested a welfare check on a relative at a local nursing home. A worried daughter said her mother abruptly hung up the phone and she thought something was wrong. She claimed nurses were refusing to tell her anything.
When police tried to call the nursing home, the phone was busy. When police arrived, they discovered the woman was watching TV and the nurses were at their station. The nurses did complain that the woman’s family members had threatened them.
What’s That Smell?
Police attempted to pull a driver over for a headlight violation just before 10 pm on 14th Street. While pulling over, the driver hit a parked car. Officers said the vehicle smelled strongly of pot. The woman told them she’d just taken a few friends to buy pot in Wayne Hills.
The driver had no insurance. Police issued a citation for the headlights.
Lonely Driver
Police made a traffic stop on Offnere Street just before 11 pm. The man was driving under a suspended license but he had a good reason for being out on the road. He told police he was lonely and looking for a woman.
Officers issued a citation and arranged for a tow.
Daughter in Danger?
A worried man called the police just after 11 pm. His daughter called him and said she was in someone’s car and they would not let her leave. Later she called back and said she’d been released at the Oasis Convenient Mart. The family was not able to contact her again.
The woman is homeless, so they weren’t sure where she might go next. Officers searched the area but couldn’t find her.
