This could have ended a whole lot differently—but thanks to some sharp-eyed neighbors and quick action from Portsmouth Police, it didn’t.
Around 1 a.m., a caller on 12th Street reported something that didn’t sit right—an elderly woman with a walker moving down the middle of the road, alone in the dark and appearing confused.
Officers found the 71-year-old woman and quickly realized she wasn’t impaired—just determined.
She told them her vehicle had broken down, and she was trying to make the long walk home to McDermott on her own. Even with a walker. In the middle of the night.
She insisted she’d be fine.
Officers weren’t taking that chance.
After some convincing, they got her to accept a ride and safely transported her to her sister’s home in West Portsmouth—getting her out of a dangerous situation before anything could happen.
💙 A LITTLE CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUE
This is one of those calls that doesn’t make headlines every day—but it should.
No crime. No arrest. Just officers paying attention, stepping in, and making sure someone got home safe.
And honestly? That kind of work matters just as much.
💡 QUICK REMINDER
If you ever see something like this—a person walking alone late at night, especially someone elderly or vulnerable—don’t assume someone else will call.
Make the call.
It might feel small, but in situations like this, it can make all the difference.
