Police Reports – Dog Days Of Summer

Portsmouth police responded to multiple calls involving dogs on Thursday, including one where a pup was rescued from a filthy home.  Plus, the curious case of a stranger who wanted to bum a shower. Get Out Of The House

Officers found a woman inside an abandoned 6th Street house just before 1 am. It turned out she had a warrant from New Boston Police.

NPBD officers arrived on the scene to serve the warrant. Portsmouth Police told her if she didn’t stay out of the house, she’d be charged with criminal trespassing.

False Alarms

  • At 4:34 am, PPD responded to an alarm at a 6th Street business. There were no signs of forced entry or any problems.
  • Officers answered a residential burglar alarm on Indian Drive just after 7 am. Everything seemed secure.
  • Another false alarm at a Ridgeway Road home just before 9 am. Police checked with the resident to make sure everything was okay.
  • A burglar alarm went off at an 11th Street business just before 9 am. An employee said she set it off but didn’t know the code.
  • Just after 2 pm, a residential alarm sounded on 20th Street. When police contacted the owner, he said it was an accident.
  • Just after 6 pm, police responded to a report of a general alarm at the Grocery Store Outlet on 11th Street. Everything appeared secure.
  • An alarm sounded at the Carousel Center on Gallia at 8:30 pm. Turned out the janitor accidentally set it off.

Under The Influence

  • Portsmouth Ambulance requested assistance from the police after an overdose on Walnut Street just before 8 am.
  • At 8:35 am, a man crashed his bicycle on 17th Street. A caller reported the man leaning against a building. It turned out he’d overdosed. An ambulance transported him to the hospital.
  • A Waller Street caller reported a suspicious man in a red pickup just before 10 am. The man seemed to be under the influence. The doors to the truck were open and the shirtless, shoeless man was driving recklessly.
  • Callers reported a man yelling and screaming at people in front of Kendall Avenue apartments at 11:26 am. Police spoke with the man.
  • Officers responded to Wayne Avenue for a report of a man yelling just after 11 pm. He refused medical attention. A resident offered to allow him to stay with her.

Dog Days

  • PPD assisted the Health Department with a loose dog just after 9 am. No one at the Health Department was available to respond to a call of an aggressive black Lab running loose on Hillview Drive.  An officer picked up the animal and placed it in the kennel at the city garage.
  • A caller reported a dog bite on Thomas Avenue at 7:30 pm. They refused an ambulance. Police took information for a report.
  • Just after 11 pm, Greenup County relayed a call from a 6th resident.  The caller said he had a dog that needed to be put down.  He refused to say what he planned to do wit the dog.  Officers spoke to the people involved.

Confused With No Place To Go

A man wandered into Hallmark Health Care on Gay Street just after 11 am to ask for help.  The confused man said he didn’t know where he was.  He was only wearing a pair of shorts.

Officers recognized him but couldn’t take him home. Police said they arrested hi for domestic violence the night before. Due to the arrest,  he was barred from his house.  Police transported him to SOMC to see a psychiatrist.

Can I Borrow A Shower?

A 24th Street caller reported a man in a red truck parked in the alley between 24th and 23rd Street just after 11:30 am. The guy went door-to-door asking if he could take a shower.  The caller later reported the stranger had left the scene.

Checkout Time

The Royal Inn on Kendall Avenue asked for help with a man who refused to check out at 12:26 pm. Turned out there was a civil issue over how much was owed.

The guy agreed to leave his room key and Portsmouth Ambulance transported him to SOMC.

Happy Birthday

An angry mom reported an unruly 17-year-old daughter to police just after 2 pm. She claimed the girl was taking property and getting ready to leave in a gray minivan.

When officers got there, they discovered the girl would turn 18 at midnight. Mom agreed to allow her to leave and move in with another family member.

This Property Is Condemned

PPD assisted the health department with a house check on Walnut Street just after 2 pm. The back door was open. Police found horrible conditions inside but no one was home.

The Health Department condemned the house and removed a dog. Police marked a junked van on the property.

Threatened With A Knife

A caller reported he’d a  man threatened him with a knife just before 3 pm. When police arrived at the Waller Street address, they arrested the suspect. The Sheriff’s Department already had a warrant for him.

House Checks

  • Officers checked inside a vacant house at 1623 6th Street at 3:15 pm. No one was inside. They started the process of boarding it up.
  • Police also noted a vacant burned structure at 1635 6th Street standing open.
