Corrections officers were called in to break up an altercation between female inmates that left one of the women with scratch marks on her face.
Officers became aware of the incident while they were collecting pop bottles from the cell sections at the Lawrence County Jail. They heard yelling and screaming from another section and went to investigate.
They found two women arguing and told them to calm down. One of the women slapped another right in front of officers. They put the women in cuffs, taking one to an isolated cell and another for treatment of injuries.
Officers noted scratch marks on her face and took statements from two other inmates who witnessed the incident.
The victim said she was sitting at a table talking with two other inmates when her attacker ran in screaming at her for no reason. She said the woman pushed her and then slapped her when officers arrived.
Witnesses backed up the victim’s statement.
