Trouble is no stranger to the Woodbine Apartments on Kendall Avenue. Just before 1:30 a.m., Portsmouth Police were called to a report of a loud argument inside one of the units.
When officers arrived, they learned a man had entered the apartment with a friend while intoxicated. He allegedly began yelling at a 17-year-old and two 11-month-old twins, demanding they get off a couch he claimed to have paid for. By the time police got there, the situation had calmed, but the man was still uncooperative.
Officers noted he seemed unconcerned about his behavior in front of the children. He was holding a Twisted Tea alcoholic beverage while speaking with police. A juvenile in the home also accused him of attempting to provide her with cocaine, though no evidence of that was found at the time. The man was warned for disorderly conduct and disturbing the household. Other adults in the apartment were advised of the eviction process.
Why This Matters for Kids
Even when no punches are thrown, living with unpredictable and volatile behavior can create a harmful environment for children. Experts say kids exposed to yelling, intoxication, or drug use often feel unsafe in their own homes. That instability can have long-term consequences:
Emotional stress: Fear and confusion can lead to anxiety, depression, or withdrawal.
Normalization of unhealthy behavior: Children may learn to accept substance abuse and aggression as part of daily life.
Developmental impact: Stressful home environments can affect school performance, sleep, and social skills.
Cycle of harm: Kids raised in chaotic households are at greater risk of repeating those patterns as adults.
The Bigger Picture
While this particular incident ended without violence, it highlights a broader reality: the presence of alcohol, drug allegations, and volatile behavior can still damage children just as much as direct abuse. Creating safe, stable spaces is critical—not just to avoid police calls, but to give kids the secure foundation they need to thrive.
