A potentially tragic situation was avoided thanks to the swift response of school staff and law enforcement after a student harmed herself with a razor blade at an area school.
Authorities say the incident happened near the end of the school day when a student confided in an intervention specialist that she had taken a razor blade from a classroom and used it to cut her leg in the restroom. The injury was minor but serious enough to raise alarm. Staff immediately stepped in to help and contacted both law enforcement and Lawrence County Child Protective Services.
Investigators later learned this was not the student’s first self-harm incident and that she had been displaying concerning emotional behavior in recent weeks. The razor and the small tin box it was stored in were collected as evidence.
School officials worked closely with the student’s guardian, explaining that while a theft charge would be filed due to the razor being taken from a classroom, the goal was not punishment — but to ensure the child receives the help and mental health evaluation she needs.
The student was removed from school until cleared by a doctor or psychologist.
Praising Quick Thinking and Compassion
Administrators, teachers, and deputies involved are being praised for acting fast and handling the situation with care and professionalism. Their teamwork likely prevented a much more serious outcome.
This incident is a powerful reminder that mental health struggles can appear even in young students, and that open communication and awareness can save lives.
