What began as a worried call from a family member ended in tragedy after deputies discovered a man dead inside his home during a welfare check.
Officers with the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office responded to a home in Wheelersburg after a caller reported they had been unable to contact a relative and feared something was wrong.
Door Ajar, No Response
When a deputy arrived, they noticed a door off the garage was partially open. Attempts to make contact inside the residence were unsuccessful. The homeowner’s granddaughter was en route and expected to arrive within 15–20 minutes, but as deputies assessed the scene, concerns escalated.
An officer was able to see a person lying on the floor inside the home and immediately called for a squad.
Because responding family members did not have the correct key, the deputy forced entry into the residence to check on the individual.
Life-Saving Efforts Too Late
Deputies cleared the home to ensure no one else was inside. Medics arrived and confirmed the man was deceased.
The Scioto County Coroner’s Office was notified and later authorized release of the deceased to a local funeral home. Members of local EMS assisted the funeral home with the transfer.
A Quiet Ending to a Worried Call
No foul play was reported, and authorities did not release additional details about the cause of death.
Incidents like this serve as a sobering reminder that welfare checks—often requested out of love and concern—can sometimes bring the hardest possible news.
