Animal Abuse Reported on Charles Street
An ongoing feud between neighbors over the alleged mistreatment and trapping of cats on Charles Street heated back up again just before 1 pm on Sunday.
A caller contacted Portsmouth Police to say they saw their neighbor hit a stray cat with a broomstick. A witness spoke to SCDN and claimed that the cat-hating neighbors “Were beating it and jabbing with a broomstick and then dumped Dawn Dish Liquid all over it as an irritant.”
However, officers heard a different story from the neighbor. He said that the cat was sleeping on his outdoor furniture, and he was just trying to get it off his porch. Police said a neighbor came and claimed the cat and that the animal was not hurt, but simply wet. Police determined there was no crime.
Our witness, who said these same neighbors killed their cat, said they are frustrated that the police won’t do anything about the issue.
Last month, officers were called to the neighborhood after a neighbor reported to officers that the other neighbor took down his fence and came onto his property to take a picture of a live trap on his patio. He put the fence back up, but it was not quite secure.
The neighbors told police their cat came up missing, and when they searched for the animal, they found it in a live trap on the neighbor’s patio. They told officers they took the picture of the trap from the alley and not from the man’s property. The couple denied taking down the fence. Both parties told police there was a TPO in place. Officers advised them to avoid each other as much as they can.
