Portsmouth Police Officers wasted no time in nabbing a lunchtime bank robber on Friday and this wasn’t his first brush with the law.
The call reporting a robbery at the People’s Bank Drive Thru on Chillicothe Street came in at 11:47 am. Witnesses said a robber brandished a knife at the teller before making off with cash.
Fortunately, quick acting officers found the man four blocks away just 9 minutes later and took him into custody at 11:56 am. Police say it looks like they recovered all of the money taken during the robbery.
Officers arrested 53-year-old David Eugene Davis on a charge of aggravated robbery. Portsmouth Police identified him as a Richmond, Virginia resident, but when Davis was arrested back in March of 2020 for robbing a Wells Fargo in Ashland, Virginia, police identified him as a resident of Lucasville, Ohio. Just like today, Davis was arrested not long after the robbery.
He pleaded guilty to the crime back in December of 2021 and was sentenced to a suspended sentence of 7 years and 5 years probation. Davis was declared a fugitive in violation of his probation back in October of last year.
At that time, Virginia police provided surveillance photos of Davis during the robbery. Davis is scheduled to appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court on Monday.
