Bessie Ann ‘Betty’ Hill Hobstetter, of Portsmouth, peacefully went home to be with Jesus at Hill View Health Care on Monday, May 26, 2025. She was born in Otway on October 29, 1934, a daughter of the late Roy Lee and Flossie Mae Unger Hill.
On October 30, 1954, she married Eugene ‘Gene’ Victor Hobstetter in Otway. The couple had been married for 62 years at the time of his death on April 28, 2017.
Betty was a graduate of the former Otway High School and she worked for many years at the former Security Central Bank in Portsmouth, where she oversaw new accounts. In later years, she also performed secretarial and bookkeeping duties for several businesses, including her husband’s company, Brush Electric.
Her faith in God was very important to her from a young age. She was a member at First Christian Church in Portsmouth for many years where she sang in the choir. In later years she enjoyed attending Temple Baptist church. A woman of Faith, she enjoyed singing and playing the piano. She was a skilled seamstress who loved to make outfits for her nieces, and she enjoyed cooking and was known for her special Carrot Cake at Christmastime. Betty enjoyed reading and writing stories, and was a member, and later the leader of, a local book club. She found great joy in helping others. She adored her beloved Scottish terrier, Misty, who preceded her in passing; traveling to the beach, especially Florida before her health declined; all things Gone with the Wind; and her beloved family.
Betty is survived by her nephew, Dr. Jeffrey (Becky) Hill of McDermott, who was her primary care physician for many years; and two nieces, Kim (Evangelist David) Frazie of Minford, and Tina (Andrew) Wilburn of Delaware, and their families; as well as the extended family of her late niece, Sue Estep.
Also preceding her in death was her brother and sister-in-law, Gary Lee and Anna Hill, and their infant son, her nephew, Timothy Lee Hill; and a niece, Sue Hill Estep.
Private funeral services will be held under the direction of the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
The family extends sincere thanks for the excellent care Betty received from the Hill View staff and the many caregivers of SOMC Hospice.
