Shoplifter Swipes Candy… and Swipes His Speedway Card!
If you’re going to steal from a store, maybe don’t use your personal rewards card at checkout!
A brazen thief who had been frequenting the Speedway in South Point thought he had the perfect scam—pocketing candy and energy shots while casually making a legal purchase. But what he didn’t count on was his own Speedway rewards card giving him away!
Caught on Camera… and in the System!
Store employees had been keeping an eye on the repeat offender, who regularly showed up around the same time each visit. The previous night, workers spotted him stuffing candy into his pockets—and this time, they had security footage to prove it.
But the real kicker? When the sticky-fingered suspect finally made his way to checkout to buy a pack of cigarettes, he used a Speedway rewards card registered under the name “ZG.”
Digital Footprints: A Criminal’s Worst Enemy
Police searched the OHLEG database for “ZG” in the area but haven’t yet confirmed the suspect’s identity. Meanwhile, officers are working to collect the store’s security footage to further lock in their case.
Lesson of the Day: Crime Doesn’t Pay—Especially If You Scan Your Card!
This incident is yet another reminder that modern technology is making it harder for criminals to get away with petty theft. Between security cameras, digital payment tracking, and now loyalty rewards programs, crooks who think they’re getting a freebie might just be handing police all the evidence they need.
And for “ZG”—if that’s even his real name—it might be time to cash in those Speedway points for a good lawyer.
