Shots rang out on Center Street just before 7 p.m., sparking chaos, confusion, and a heavy police response that ended with multiple weapons seized, a victim in the hospital, and one woman in handcuffs.
At least five Portsmouth Police cruisers swarmed the neighborhood after callers reported gunfire. Officers quickly detained a man and woman near the scene and launched a full search for a gray Ford with purple tape on the mirror — the car allegedly involved in the incident.
🔫 Weapons, Warrants & Wounded Victims
During their sweep of the area, officers:
- Recovered a firearm near the shooting scene
- Located and searched the suspect vehicle, ultimately impounding several weapons
- Stopped another vehicle on Mound Street believed to be connected to the case
Meanwhile, a male shooting victim was rushed to Grant Medical Center by Portsmouth Ambulance. His current condition has not been released.
In the middle of it all, officers arrested Sydney Borders on an open warrant for failure to appear in court — not directly tied to the shooting but caught up in the chaos.
❗ Hear Gunshots? Here’s What to Do:
If you ever hear what you believe are gunshots:
- Get to safety immediately — go inside and away from windows.
- Call 911 — even if you’re not sure. Let dispatchers know your location and what you heard.
- Avoid the area — don’t try to investigate or film the scene. Let law enforcement do their job.
- Report anything suspicious — like fleeing vehicles, injured individuals, or dropped weapons.
