Cold weather always brings dangers of accidents involving heaters, and a child was injured after an incident on Slab Run Road just before 7 pm.
A caller contacted 911 to say a garage propane heater caught fire at a home, and a child was burned. The child’s mother was headed to the Super Quick with the burn victim.
Deputies noted the child was burned and called for an ambulance. Once the mother and child were on the way to the hospital, an officer secured the vehicle and picked up some items the mom had left behind in the car. They brought them to her at SOMC.
To avoid accidents with propane heaters in cold weather, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Ensure the heater is placed on a flat, stable surface away from flammable materials like curtains, furniture, or paper. Use propane heaters only in well-ventilated areas to prevent carbon monoxide buildup, and never leave them running unattended or while you sleep. Regularly inspect the heater for leaks or damage, and use a propane detector for added safety. Keep children and pets at a safe distance, and always turn the heater off and let it cool before moving or storing it.
