Just after midnight, Portsmouth Police rushed to a home on reports of children in crisis — a call that illustrates how deeply addiction continues to affect families across our area.
Callers told dispatchers they feared a child might be in danger because of the mother’s drug use. When officers arrived, they immediately took control of the situation, reading Miranda rights to an adult at the scene and ensuring the children were safe.
Children’s Services Responds Quickly
Child Protective Services (CPS) was contacted and arrived around 2:30 a.m. After assessing the situation, it was agreed the children would leave with their father.
Police also recovered a syringe from the home and impounded it as evidence before completing their report.
Swift Action Praised
Both law enforcement and CPS acted quickly to protect the children — a reminder that teamwork between officers and social workers can make all the difference in high-risk situations like these.
While the region continues to battle the long shadow of addiction, local responders are often the last line of defense for vulnerable kids caught in the middle. Thanks to their fast action that night, these children are safe.
