Portsmouth Police are investigating after a woman reported a frightening encounter at the Kroger grocery store.
The woman told officers she was shopping between 3:45 and 4:30 p.m. when a man began following her through the aisles. When she went to check out, the man put his hand on her back and whispered something in her ear—though she couldn’t make out what he said.
Other customers noticed the situation and stepped in, escorting her safely to her car.
Police Follow-Up
The woman later came to the police station to file a formal report. She described the man as a white male in his late 30s, overweight, with brown hair, a close-shaven beard, and wearing a yellow shirt.
Officers contacted Kroger management, who said they were already aware of the incident. However, they had not yet been able to access store security footage. Police provided further details and are waiting for video review to help identify the suspect.
What To Do If You Think You’re Being Followed
Incidents like this can be unsettling, but there are steps you can take if you ever feel unsafe in public:
- Don’t ignore your instincts. If something feels off, pay attention.
- Change direction. Walk to a different aisle, or head toward a staffed area.
- Make eye contact. Sometimes acknowledging someone can deter predatory behavior.
- Seek help. Tell store staff or security right away.
- Ask for an escort. Just like in this case, bystanders or staff can walk you safely to your car.
- Report it. Contact police as soon as possible with a detailed description.
Police are reminding shoppers to stay aware of their surroundings and to never hesitate to ask for help if they feel threatened.
