A disabled couple called 911 to complain that a contractor had taken more than $100,000 of their money but still refused to complete the job.
She told officers she’d had a stroke and her husband was also disabled, so they hired a contractor to build a small home for them. However, they’d already put $105,000 into their new home, and the contractor hadn’t finished the job that had started in 2021.
She said the contractor told her he’d gotten sick and that his son would finish the job, but nothing happened. The man came back in 2022 and said he would finish the job. When nothing happened, she attempted to contact him multiple times before he told her he had filed for bankruptcy but had not included her house in his filing.
He again said he planned to finish, but first needed a trailer and other property he’d left on their property to complete another job before getting back to theirs. The woman said they told him he couldn’t have his trailer back until he finished their house.
The woman said they’d finally had to hire someone else to finish the house. The underpinning was damaged, and the ceiling was left open. The wife said the couple had put their life savings into the home and were in no position to spend money to get it properly finished.
Officers said it was likely a civil issue but did write up a complaint of theft by deception as the homeowners were elderly and disabled. They said they could try to follow up with the contractor to see what was going on.
