Elected officials don’t always do the right thing
“Remember, that just because it’s a law doesn’t mean that elected officials always do the right thing,” Scioto County Commissioner Bryan Davis said as he explained his reasons for supporting a resolution to declare Scioto County a Second Amendment Sanctuary.
On Thursday, Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of a resolution declaring the county’s opposition to enforcing any gun laws it feels are contrary to the Second Amendment.
Davis says it was not prompted by any fear in changes to state law. He said that Commissioner Mike Crabtree serves on the board of directors of the State Association of County Commissioners and keeps the other members apprised of what types of legislation is currently making its way through the Ohio House and Senate.
“In Ohio, there is not a will with the legislature that I see right now – and we pay attention to this really closely,” Davis said. He said the reasons for passing the resolution are pre-emptive.
“Just a reminder that we support what the Constitution says and it isn’t something we want to debate. We don’t feel under threat in Ohio.”
He added that the Commissioners support all 27 Amendments to the Constitution and not just the right to keep and bear arms. He said while he had confidence in the court system to overturn any unconstitutional laws, that it could sometimes take years for that to happen.
He added that appreciated the input from those who opposed the resolution as well. “That’s why this country is so great. We have freedom of speech.”
