Family Targeted Over Online Post—But Was It All a Lie?
A Proctorville couple found themselves at the center of an online firestorm after a Facebook post wrongfully accused them of animal neglect—but when deputies investigated, they found zero signs of mistreatment.
THE CALL THAT STARTED IT ALL
Deputies were first dispatched to the home after reports claimed a dog was trapped in mud, unable to reach food, water, or shelter.
But when authorities arrived, the truth painted a very different picture.
The dog had fresh food and water.
The dog had access to shelter—but simply didn’t use it much.
The dog was healthy, playful, and well-fed.
The homeowner even allowed deputies to take photos to document the dog’s well-being.
SOCIAL MEDIA FIRESTORM
But just when they thought the drama was over, things took a turn for the worse.
A Facebook post appeared, complete with pictures of the dog and the family’s home address, claiming the pet was being neglected.
The post exploded online, leading to a flood of angry comments and threats.
They feared strangers would begin showing up near their home, fueled by the viral accusations.
“WE JUST WANT TO BE LEFT ALONE!”
Terrified, the homeowner’s wife called the sheriff’s office for a second time—this time over threats sparked by the false post.
“I just want the post taken down. I don’t want people showing up at my house!” she told deputies.
While authorities confirmed they couldn’t force the poster to remove the post, they advised the family to report any suspicious visitors and keep records of online harassment.
THE TRUTH COMES OUT
After reviewing screenshots of the post and comparing them with evidence from the scene, authorities forwarded the case to investigators.
This marks the second time officers have visited the home on false animal complaints—both times confirming NO mistreatment.
THE DANGER OF VIRAL Posts
The power of social media can bring justice—but when used irresponsibly, it can destroy innocent lives.
There’s no evidence this couple did anything wrong—yet they found themselves harassed, threatened, and shamed because of one misleading post.
