The prices at Family Dollar on 11th Street weren’t low enough for two would-be thieves who decided to help themselves, until a sharp-eyed employee shut them down.
Around 8 p.m., the store manager reported that two women—one in a blue shirt and black hat, the other in a pink shirt carrying a white bag—were stuffing perfume, tools, and body wash into their bags. The pair tried to slip out and headed west on 11th Street.
But the employee wasn’t about to let them get away. She was able to recover all the stolen merchandise and made the women sign no-trespass forms banning them from the store.
Police checked the area but were unable to locate the suspects.
Shoplifters should take note: businesses in Portsmouth are on high alert, and employees are stepping up as the first line of defense. Cameras are rolling, police are only a call away, and stolen items often end up back in the store before thieves make it far.
