Portsmouth firefighters were called out around 6 p.m. to battle a fast-moving woodland fire near Swauger Valley Road and Harding Avenue.
When crews arrived, flames were spreading quickly up the hillside, forcing them to call in help from county units. By 7 p.m., the fire was under control and Portsmouth’s engine company was back in station.
Was It Accident or Arson?
The exact cause of the blaze is not yet known. Fire officials have not said whether it was accidental or intentionally set. A local tow truck driver told investigators they captured video of someone starting the fire and shared that footage with police, who are reviewing it.
The Dangers of Woodland Fires This Time of Year
With falling leaves, dry brush, and cooler winds, October is prime season for woodland fires in southern Ohio. Even a small flame can spread rapidly through wooded hillsides, putting homes, wildlife, and first responders at risk. Fires like this can also smolder unseen in leaf litter, flaring back up hours or even days later.
Officials remind residents to use caution when burning brush, disposing of cigarettes, or handling anything that could spark flames.
The investigation into the Swauger Valley fire is ongoing.
