Gail Greene, 74, of Portsmouth, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025, surrounded by her family at home. She was born July 8, 1950, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Finis Brendt and Isabell Holden Melvin.
A 1969 Portsmouth High School graduate, Gail was an active member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, served as assistant treasurer, and coordinated meals for congregational gatherings. Gail was also a member of the North End Reunion Committee. She had worked at SOMC as a patient representative and Human Resources administrative assistant, and at DESCO as a teller.
On March 18, 1984, she married Larry James Greene in Portsmouth, and the couple recently celebrated 41 years together.
In addition to her beloved husband, Gail is survived by three sons, Jeremy Lee Bass of Houston, TX, Albert Jerome (Carolyn) Bass of Portsmouth, and Ashraf Greene of Pensacola, FL; one sister, Edna Harris of Durham, NC; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Bass, Jr., Ava Bass, Jordis Bass, A.J. Bass, Alenagail Bass, Aeslyn Greene and Skyler Howard; and a host of nieces, nephews and their families.
Gail was also preceded in death by three siblings, Roger Finis Melvin, Maxine Shumate, and Jean Burketh.
Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Scioto Burial Park with Bishop Harold Bell officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
