Garry E. Adkins, 74, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025. Born on July 28, 1951, in Chattanooga, TN, Garry was a cherished community member of Portsmouth. He was the beloved son of James Edwin Adkins and the late Betty Wise.
Garry was an active member of the South Webster Community Church, where he taught Bible Class. He will be remembered by those who knew him as a man that loved the Bible and had a verse ready for any occasion. An avid fisherman and gun collector, Garry found peace in the moments spent out in the world and with nature.
He served his country with distinction, spending 18 months in the US Marines and 4 years in the US Air Force in Germany. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he also served as a Navy Seabee.
Garry is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Joyce, his daughter Stephanie (husband Michael) Sullivan, and Jamey Chambers, who was like a son to him. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Alex (fiancée Morgan) and Katelynn Sullivan, as well as their dog, Copper. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Wise, his grandmother, Mona Pendergrass, his sister, Sheila Arney, and his dogs, Maya, Gigi, and Buddy.
Family and friends are invited to gather at the D. W. Swick Funeral Home in South Webster on Saturday, August 23, 2025, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM. A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 PM with Pastor Merit Smith officiating.
