A worried couple walked into the sheriff’s office this week with disturbing claims about the way their grandchildren are being raised.
They told deputies the kids are living in what they described as “horrible conditions” — a filthy home where the children are often left unsupervised. One child, they said, recently suffered a cut to the forehead after being left alone. They also reported untreated dental problems, saying the kids already have visible cavities and are showing signs of feeling abandoned.
The couple added that the children’s parents are caught up in constant fighting and heavy substance abuse. According to their statement, both adults go on drug binges and drink heavily, leaving the kids to fend for themselves.
Deputies were also told that the father of the children is currently on probation and under court supervision. The family claimed he’s been violating court orders by continuing to live with his partner, despite a no-contact order being in place.
Child Protective Services confirmed to deputies that there is already an active investigation into the home. The probation officer assigned to the case also said a violation has been filed and that drug testing will be carried out.
The grandparents provided photos of one of the children’s injuries and said they had additional photos and video of the home. They were advised to send the evidence to investigators so it can be added to the case file.
The sheriff’s office has now forwarded all reports and documentation to both CPS and probation officials for further action.
This troubling case is another reminder of how quickly children can fall through the cracks when substance abuse and domestic conflict take over a household — and how it’s often family members who step in first to sound the alarm.
