Hackers get hacked as victims warned to run an antivirus
In what can only be considered a case of computer karma, the folks behind am annoying malware that infects your computer with spam found themselves a victim of hacking when warnings started popping up on infected computers telling users to run their antivirus.
The malware in question is called the Phorpiex Botnet.
Once it gets on your PC, it uses it to send out massive spam campaigns and infect other computers. Phorpiex has been around for about ten years and makes its money by sending out spam campaigns on behalf of cybercriminals. This includes a recent extortion claim when crooks claim to have sexually explicit images of the victim that they’ll share unless they are paid.
According to security researchers at Checkpoint, it appears the malware has been hijacked and instructed to uninstall itself. Infected users are also left with a warning to install antivirus and check their system.
Who’s behind this turn of events? It could be anyone from rival cybercriminals to an unknown law enforcement agency to white hat hackers. White hat hacking is a term used for those who choose to use their hacking powers for good not evil.
