With the Scioto County Dog Shelter already bursting at the seams and a budget crisis looming, the shelter is offering the public a unique opportunity to make a big difference—sponsor a kennel!
The shelter currently has 24 kennels and two quarantine kennels, but with Ohio House Bill 247 on the horizon, Dog Warden Heather Stevens is worried the pound could fill up even faster. The new bill would change how dog bites are handled, potentially increasing the shelter’s workload and further stressing its already stretched resources.
“With the county in a budget crisis and asking all agencies to make cuts, we need all the help we can get,” Stevens said. “But we’ve come up with a way that everyone can pitch in, from local businesses to schools, and even individuals.”
The idea, spearheaded by newly appointed Dog Warden Eli Miller, allows anyone to sponsor a kennel at the shelter for as little as $20 a month. Sponsorship options include $20, $50, and $100 per month, with the funds going toward kennel maintenance, shelter upkeep, and general care for the dogs.
“We’ve got some kennels that need a lot of work, and this sponsorship program could really help us out,” Stevens added. “Eli has been brilliant with this initiative. His ideas are exactly what we need to bring more attention to the shelter and the challenges we’re facing.”
The shelter is currently at “Code Red,” with all kennels completely full. In a recent Facebook post, the shelter emphasized how urgent the situation is: “Adoptions are now being sponsored through the end of the month! Come out and see the great dogs we have—your best friend is waiting for you!”
If you’re interested in making a difference, this is the perfect time to step up and sponsor a dog kennel. And if you’re looking to add a new member to your family, adoptions are being sponsored, making it easier than ever to adopt a furry companion.
In addition to sponsoring a kennel, you can help by ensuring your pets are under control and spayed or neutered, which can help reduce the number of strays coming into the shelter.
With your support, the Scioto County Dog Shelter can continue its vital work while keeping the dogs in its care safe and loved. So why not help out today—because every dog deserves a chance at a forever home! Contact the shelter at (740) 353-8802.
