We’ve reported on several busts involving dangerous illegal drugs lately. Drugs like meth and fentanyl can make people ill or even kill them on contact. So, how do local law enforcement stay safe? We asked Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman.
According to the sheriff, his deputies glove up and package suspected drugs into evidence bags before sending them to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for analysis. “It is much safer to do this than to field test the item due to the lethality of Fentanyl.”
But since the narcotics may be required as evidence in a criminal trial, the agency sends them back, “Once the test is complete, BCI&I will send the narcotic back to us. Once the case is complete in court, and there are no appeals, we ask for a destruction order, or the court may order the destruction after the case is complete.”
