The hunt is on for a man the Michigan Department of Corrections says was improperly released by the Scioto County jail.
Talleon Stephon Brazil, 31, was transferred to the Scioto County Jail from the Saginaw Correctional facility to face drug charges in Ohio. He was currently serving a sentence of 14-40 years for robbery, carjacking, firearms, and drug charges.
Instead of being held in jail until his trial was finished, MDOC says he was mistakenly released on $50,000 bond. He was then picked up by his family who they believe drove him to Detroit. MDOC says the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office notified them of the error on Thursday.
MDOC’s Absconder Recovery Unit was activated to search for him, along with the U.S. Marshals Service, Michigan State Police, Wayne County Michigan Sheriff’s Department, and the Detroit Police Department. His family has also been contacted and advised to tell him to turn himself in.
Brazil is 5’ 10” and 205 pounds and is considered dangerous. Police say anyone who spots him should call 911.
“We are focused on finding this individual and returning him to custody as soon as possible,” said Michigan Department of Corrections Director Heidi Washington. “We are asking for help from the public to contact the police or to call 911 if you have information that would assist in the investigation.”
I contacted the Scioto County Sheriff’s Office for comment and was transferred four times before getting voice mail. I’ll update this story when I hear a response.
