A federal judge sentenced former Pike County deputy Jeremy Mooney, to more than eight years in prison for pepper spraying and punching a restrained inmate.
Disgraced deputy Jeremy Mooney’s violent assault on a suspect at the Pike County Sheriff’s Office back in 2019 was all captured on video. After placing a man in a violent prisoner restraint chair and securing his hands, Mooney spent an hour assaulting the man. He dragged him outside and pepper-sprayed him, tipped the chair back on the curb, and pepper-sprayed him again.
Jeremy Mooney punched the victim at least 11 times with enough force to break his own hand. Pike County Sheriff’s Office Supervisor, William Stansberry, Jr., 47, also pleaded guilty in the case for failing to stop the assault.
Mooney was found guilty back in August after a 2-day trial but sentencing was delayed until March at the request of his attorneys.
“This defendant is being sentenced for the violent assault of an inmate who was confined to a restraint chair and unable to protect himself or escape from the abuse,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “All people in our country have a right to be free from excessive force by law enforcement officers. The Justice Department will continue to aggressively prosecute any law enforcement officer who willfully violates the civil rights of the people they are sworn to protect and serve.”
Mooney will spend the next 100 months in prison.
