A savage stabbing outside the New Boston Walmart shocked the community in January—now, delays in court proceedings have families asking: where’s the justice?
Four teenagers are facing a mountain of serious charges after allegedly luring a friend to the Walmart Plaza under false pretenses and ambushing him in a near-fatal attack.
The suspects:
- Waylon Cooley, 18, Portsmouth
- Trinida Castro, 17, Franklin Furnace
- Zander Daniels, 18, New Boston
- Shelby Broughton, 18, Portsmouth
Authorities say the group claimed they wanted to help buy shoes for someone in need—but it was all a setup. Once the victim arrived, he was stabbed and left bleeding on the pavement, clinging to life.
Heavy Charges Filed
The Scioto County Grand Jury didn’t hold back. The teens face a laundry list of felonies:
- Attempted Aggravated Murder (3 counts)
- Attempted Murder (2 counts)
- Felonious Assault (2 counts)
- Kidnapping (2 counts)
- Aggravated Robbery (2 counts)
- Robbery (3 counts)
- Conspiracy (2 counts)
- Tampering with Evidence (3 counts)
Justice on Pause
The group was scheduled for a pretrial hearing on July 23, but that hearing was abruptly canceled. Defense attorneys filed motions demanding:
- Walmart security footage
- Interviews with suspects and witnesses
- Crime scene photographs
- DNA evidence
- Medical records of the victim
- Search warrants
- Complete evidence reports
Where Things Stand
- Cooley, Daniels, and Broughton are still behind bars at the Scioto County Jail.
- Castro is currently being held at the Ross County Juvenile Corrections Facility.
- A new court date has not yet been announced.
As the legal process drags on, one thing is clear—justice delayed is justice denied. Scioto County Daily News will keep you updated every step of the way.
