A night of riding turned deadly when an ATV crash claimed the life of a young passenger and led to criminal charges against the driver.
Just after 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, Kentucky State Police say 39-year-old Adam D. Thacker was riding his ATV near River Street in Vanceburg when he lost control on a curve. The vehicle overturned, throwing a juvenile passenger from the ATV. The child was rushed to Meadow View Hospital with life-threatening injuries but sadly didn’t survive.
Thacker was arrested and now faces several serious charges, including:
- Vehicular Homicide While Under the Influence
- Operating a Motor Vehicle Under the Influence (Aggravated)
- Criminal Trespassing
Police believe alcohol played a role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing, led by KSP Detective Matt Martin.
ATV Safety Matters
This heartbreaking incident is a sobering reminder of the dangers that can come with ATVs—especially when children are involved.
Here’s what you need to know about ATV safety:
- It’s not a toy: ATVs are powerful machines that require training and caution, just like a car or motorcycle.
- Age matters: Many ATVs are not designed for children or teens. Always follow manufacturer age recommendations.
- Wear a helmet: Every rider—driver or passenger—should wear a helmet and protective gear.
- Stay sober: Just like with any vehicle, never operate an ATV under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Stick to safe areas: Stay off paved roads and never ride on private property without permission.
Let this tragedy serve as a call to action for safer riding practices. One moment of fun should never cost a life.
