A student landed in alternative school after a pocket knife fell out of his jacket in the gymnasium.
A deputy working a detail with the South Point Local School District was called to the assistant principal’s office after a staff member recovered the knife.
According to the report, the student was in the gym shortly before the bell rang for a class change. As he put on a camouflage jacket, a knife fell from his pocket and hit the gym floor.
A staff member asked the student about the knife. The student initially said it wasn’t his, but when the staff member pointed out that he had watched it fall from the student’s pocket, the student reportedly said he had forgotten it was there.
The student and the knife were taken to the assistant principal’s office, and the student’s parents were contacted.
According to the sheriff’s report, the parents explained that their child was involved in Boy Scouts and had developed a habit of carrying his knife with him. They said they planned to confiscate his knives at home for the time being.
School officials and the deputy discussed the seriousness of bringing a weapon onto school property and explained that the incident still had to be formally reported.
The school imposed five days of alternative school, scheduled from August 26 through September 1.
The deputy collected the pocket knife and statements from the student and school staff. The knife was photographed and submitted into evidence.
The report does not indicate that the student was arrested or taken to juvenile detention.
