LaVonda Mae Cummings, 87, of McDermott, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at SOMC Hospice in Portsmouth with her family by her side. She was born on July 31, 1937, in Portsmouth to the late James Theodore Crabtree and Hilda Evelyn Williams Crabtree. On December 25, 1973, she was united in marriage to Samuel Lewis Cummings, who preceded her in death on June 14, 2021. In addition to her husband and parents, LaVonda was also preceded in passing by her children, James R. Crabtree and Kent L. Crabtree; grandsons, Mason Schneider and Enrique Crabtree; granddaughter, Heather Kazee Ottney; brother, Ronald J. Crabtree and sister, Vera J. Crabtree. LaVonda is survived by her children, Ronald (Renee) Crabtree, Angela (James) Barrett and Regina (William) Mahle; grandchildren, Nicole (Laura Buck) Brooks, R. Todd (Veronica) Phipps, Jason (Emily) Phipps, Tracie (Nick) Broughton, Amon Crabtree, M. Gayle Crabtree, Alissa (Chris) Allison and Ricky (Jamie) Ottney; a special aunt and friend, Winona “Nona” Craycraft; 25 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
LaVonda was a retired elementary school teacher from Northwest Local School District and Portsmouth City School District in Ohio and LasVegas, Nevada and Cary, North Carolina Schools. She was a member of the Christ’s Restoration Branch of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
LaVonda’s family would like to express their gratitude to Ivan Ealey and Penny Williams for the special care and support they provided LaVonda in her home and the compassionate staff of the intensive care unit at Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe for the exceptional care they provided during her stay with them.
Per LaVonda’s wishes there will be graveside services held and no flowers are to be sent.
Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at Scioto Burial Park in McDermott, Ohio with Mike Chaffin officiating.
